Washington has the White House and London Buckingham Palace, but at the centre of Hanoi resides not the family of a head of state but a family of giant turtles and their place of residence is Ho Hoan Kiem, the Lake of the Redeemed Sword. Some might claim that the spiritual centre lies a little way off where the founder of modern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, lies in his mausoleum, but in the evenings it is to Ho Hoan Kiem that people flock to circumnavigate their venerated lake.
