Looking Back: Tourism in Kenya
"Mzungu" is the cry we hear as foreigners travelling in Kenya. From slave traders to British colonialism, Kenya has been dealing with foreigners in various guises throughout its history. Since 1975 however a commitment to welcoming foreign tourists began with the founding of the Kenya Utalii College, a dedicated hospitality and tourism training institute. Also in 1975, the Africa Travel Association (ATA) was established to assist the new African nations to develop their tourism infrastructure. In 2008 sadly, tourism slumped by about 50% following a violent election but since then Kenyan tourism has been growing from strength to strength.
