Why do we enjoy roller coasters, horror movies, and so called "extreme sports" so much? Because it allows us to test our mortality, and place ourselves in just enough danger and risk to excite us, but at the same time it means that we have that safety net i.e. that it will be over soon. If we were really confronted with a violent, knife-wielding psychopath, giant werewolf or alien invasion in real life then we would probably find the process a lot less enjoyable!
