In the 1800s, the Caribbean island of Barbados was a major British military base and the headquarters of the Windward and Leeward command of the English forces. Anyone with an interest in military history in general or Barbados history in particular must stop by Barbados' British Garrison, recently named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
