Kumasi is the capital of Ashanti Region and the second city of Ghana after the national capital, Accra. Established by the Ashanti tribe as their national capital Kumasi is now home to people from all over Ghana, drawn by the city's diverse economy and numerous training opportunities. It is home to Ghana's Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the vast Suame Magazine, Ghana's largest informal industrial area and the home at the turn of the century to one hundred thousand artisans and apprentices. These features may not attract tourists but Kumasi has much else that makes a short visit more than worthwhile.
