Perth: The City of Light
Perth became famous as The City of Lights after residents switched on their home and streetlights to "welcome" US astronaut John Glenn as he passed over the city in the space shuttle Friendship in 1962. The act was repeated when Glenn passed over the city in another space shuttle in 1998.
