Devon's largest conurbation, and one of Britain's greatest seafaring cities, Plymouth produced such sea dogs as Francis Drake and John Hawkins, both of whom played a leading role in the rout of the Spanish Armada in 1588. An important naval base, the city endured ferocious bombing in World War II and fared little better from insensitive rebuilding in the war's aftermath.
