Average farm size, at roughly 13.5 acres (5.5 ha), is large by Asian standards. Moreover, the country has a relatively large livestock population, particularly cattle and pigs. These factors go far to explain why a standard of living is higher in Thailand than in many other countries of Asia. Except near Bangkok, tenancy is not extreme. Relatively little landlessness exists. The situation is changing rapidly with population growth, however, and the future is not promising. The once extensive forests have been drastically reduced through new clearing. Indeed, forest clearing has contributed to flooding, which resulted in a ban on uncontrolled logging in 1989.
