The streets and highways of the nation's capital may appear to be a veritable "alphabet soup" to the uninformed, but are actually inspired by European city plans and form the centerpiece of a distinctive city layout.  What many visitors to Washington, DC., may not realize is that the original street layout and overall plan for the city has changed little since Pierre L'Enfant designed it more than 200 years ago.
